Meghalaya

Introduction

A place where misty mountains and glistening river come together to create a perfect symphony of nature and the people welcome you with the brightest smile. Meghalaya is a dream come true for all the nature lovers as it's a beauty tucked away in the lapse of garo, Khasi and jaitia hill.

A place that never stops to hear the rain over their roofs and a place that is governed by the lady of the house so much that the men feel discriminated about not given enough attention as the warrior khasi tribes follow a strict matriarchy system. There is an unsung melody in the deep forest of Meghalaya which the tribes can understand through their bones as nature allows them to grow through her in perfect harmony.

Meghalaya Introduction

Through the woods of Khasi hills

A group of tribes who doesn’t have a written language but the tales of their survival and laughter lives through the stories passed from generation to generation. It is believed that the tribes residing in the lap of Khasi hills are originally from Cambodia who claimed this lush green forested land after they migrated to India.

The more you dive deeper into the wilderness the more you understand nature. As you trek through the dense forest, over living root bridges to witness the emerald colour natural swimming pools formed by the fossilized rocks, and gushing waterfalls feeding these pools.

Understand the tribes worshipping the forest. Them believing in its mysticism and magic of the language of trees in its sacred groove as it is guarded by ancient monoliths. Meghalaya is also a place where language can’t be scripted.

That is because people address each other in melodies of whistle and the tradition has been passed down through generations, and it is a source of pride and identity for the community, as mother creates a distinct tune for its child making it a form of personalized communication.

Cascade through the unknown roads of Garo Hills

Stepping away from the population and people, there is an untapped and unexplored region of this lush green state which lies on the deep Garo hills where the Garo tribes dressed in the colourful shawls and an attractive headband reside.

What better way to enjoy then kayaking through the creeks of Garo hills while listening to the purest sound of the nature as the water ebbs through the sound of birds chirping and sun glistening through the walls across the stream.

Cave through the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites formed naturally in the caves of the hills, find a world tucked away into the deep darks of nature.

Indulge in the flavors of Meghalaya by trying local dishes like Jadoh (rice and meat), Doh Neiiong (pork cooked with black sesame seeds), and various preparations of bamboo shoots. Don't miss the refreshing taste of Kyat, a traditional rice beer.

The happy localites here always find a reason to spread joy via dancing and singing as it is said that atleast one person in any household knows to play an instrument, such is their connection to folklore and music. From the wangala dance of that commemorates the break of the autumn to laho dance that is performed for sheer entertainment and glee.
